SUMMARY OF PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH CERTIFICATE I TO IV
The main outcomes for students are:
- Attainment of educational, vocational and social goals;
- Enhanced ability to function effectively in the Australian community;
- Improved access to employment, further English language programs and other vocational training, and;
- Skills for on-going, self-directed learning.
Students who successfully complete the Certificate I in English Proficiency will be able to use the English language to satisfy basic survival needs in the Community and workplace in a limited range of familiar and routine contexts. They will require supportive and sympathetic environments for effective participation in social and employment-related activities.
Students who successfully complete the Certificate II in English Proficiency will be able to use the English language to satisfy essential social and workplace needs in a range of familiar and predictable contexts. They will be able to participate in other preparatory courses, including broad-based general education and entry level workplace training.
Students who successfully complete the Certificates III and IV in English Proficiency will have acquired English language skills which will offer them a range of further study and career Opportunities. Those students who are overseas educated will be in a position to seek employment in their trade or profession at a level commensurate with their previous employment or training. These students will be able to use the English language in the relevant work environment and will possess learning strategies which will enable them to continue their English language development as independent learners.
In addition, emerging and ever-increasing markets are developing for overseas-born students who are seeking study options in Australia. The content of the Certificate IV provides preparation for these students to gain entry to other tertiary or higher education courses. In many instances, modules from this course can be integrated into, or offered simultaneously with vocational courses. In addition, units of competency from national Training Packages are included as electives and students undertaking these are able to proceed towards a vocational qualification at the same time as they complete their certificate/s in English Proficiency.
